Xerox Phaser 8500/8550/8560 09,035.43-09,038.43 error codes
June 7th, 2010 at 12:29 pm   starstarstarstarstar

Errors 09,035.43, 09,036.43,09,037.43, 09,038.43

This error code indicates the ink count sensor flag is stuck after melting 2.5 sticks of ink. Only the string of numbers up to the colon is needed to diagnose the code, everything after the colon is your printer's meter reading and not needed. The 09 refers to the system having the issue (inkloader) and the 03x refers to the color having the problem ( where x=5 for cyan, 6 for magenta, 7 for yellow, and 8 for black).

Anyone who has run into this error on the Xerox Phaser solid ink printer knows how annoying it can be. Even moreso when the technician gets on-site removes a broken ink stick and fiddles with the control panel for a few minutes and you're back up and running, albeit with a healthy hit to the wallet.

So how can you avoid having the issue?

Don't fill the ink completely full. If you try and cram the inkloader full of ink, you take the chance of placing too much pressure on the bottom cube (the one that rests against the ink heaters) and either breaking the cube which can cause the error, or worse, breaking the heater (which results in the replacement of the entire inkloader assembly). The ink is sold in a nifty 3 pack, which is all I would recommend placing inside the inkloader.

Don't place a broken or cracked ink stick inside the inkloader. Not only will it be difficult to remove if needed, the broken half may have a jagged edge that will not slide all the way down, causing the error code to pop up for that color.

It's too late! The error is up. What do I do now?

All isn't lost yet, there are one or two things you can do before needing to call a service technician. All you have to do is take a look at what to avoid to begin troubleshooting the problem yourself.

First you want to remove as much ink as possible from the inkloader if it is too full, then try powering the machine off and then on. If it comes to ready the problem is solved. If not you then want to see if any of the ink left at the heaters is cracked. This is extremely difficult as it is usually melted to the heater, not to mention really hard to reach. Try again to power off and on to see if it is cleared.

If not, there is one last thing you can do to try and fix the error without a technician. You'll want to head into service mode and clear the ISC fault in diagnostics (Ink Stick Count). This will temporarily clear the error. Power off and back on and if the issue is gone, then you're good to go. If not, it is time to call a technician out to look into replacing the inkloader or printhead (rare).

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to tell you how to get into service mode, but a quick Google search should pull that information up for you just fine. Hope this was useful to someone, and please comment if you'd like to see more posts of a similiar nature on the blog!

Hope everyone has a great day!

My phaser 8560MFP is now just 1 year old and I have had Xerox out twice to replace cracked ink sicks.  It required them on both occasions to dismantle the top of my copier and dump the broken sticks out.  About 1 hour each time..but under warranty.  I complained but they assured me the bad batch of sticks are out of the system.  Today it has happen again and my warranty is now up by 1 week.

Does anyone think this is deliberate to make money on the service end of Xerox.....?

Here in Ohio we have a Lemon Law and unless they repair it under warranty I,m calling the District Attorney and have them give me my money back.

Unfortunately Doug, the issue isn't with the printer itself but with the ink. Putting in cracked or broken ink sticks is a no-no. The printer is behaving exactly as it's supposed to, it's properly stating that the ink count sensor flag is stuck.

Try these links before stressing over the repair:

How to enter service mode: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/55586#3

How to remove broken or cracked ink sticks: http://www.support.xerox.com/support/phaser-8560/support/enus.html

Just a word of advice. The warranties on these machines run about $220 (a little less through resellers like us) for a 1 year extension. A single service call on the machine without parts will likely run you that much. I would take out a service agreement in your place.

Hope those links help you and relieve some of your frustration Doug. Have a great day and thanks for visiting me here at Xerographic Supply & Equipment!

Thanks for your post, it helped me when our Phaser 8860 was displaying the above errors.  One of the colors was allowed to run dry and produced the error.  After loading the color sticks it and cycling the power it still gave the error.  Found out how to enter the service mode and cleared the error.  After a good cleaning the unit is back up and running.  Thanks again.

Glad to hear it John! Xerox recently came out with a new service reward loyalty program called EConcierge. Basically when you signup for the program, you can download and install the Xerox Supply Assistant software. Once installed, place an order through the software for 2 supplies for the machine you want the service reward on, and then let the software run continuously for 30 days. After the end of the 30 days you're machine will be back under a service contract with Xerox and will stay that way as long as you keep ordering through the software, don't uninstall the software for an extended period of time, and until Xerox reports the machine to no longer be on the program (they won't be doing this for the Phaser 8200's for example). If interested just click the Home link (top link of our menu box), and the main picture in the center of the screen is the Free Service Program. Click it to read all the details, watch videos, and see if this plan is right for you :D

THANK YOU!!!!! You da man. Solved it with no parts. No one else seemed to be able to help. The service manual said to replace the NVRAM when all I had to do was clear the error.

Thank you for the help in your blog. I had been working on my 8560 all morning. Swapping ink feed parts off an old 8550 that had been faithful to me for 400k+ copies before it finally quit. I found the sequence for getting into the service mode and was able to clear the codes and now it is up and running again. At 115k+ copies so far, I hope it lasts as long as the 8550 did.
