On Demand Image Overwrite Failed
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:59 am   starstarstarstarstar

Newer Xerox machines contain a security feature called Image Overwrite. This feature removes data about the job on the copier from the copier's hard drive. It is intended to make it so sensitive files cannot be retrieved from the hard drive itself. Sometimes an error will occur which prevents the machine from properly overwriting a job on the hard drive. This will result in getting an error indicating that the Image Overwrite failed, perform an on demand image overwrite.

Performing an on demand image overwrite can take quite a bit of time depending on how big your hard drive is on the copier. If you've ever formatted your hard drive on your home PC, that should give you an idea of how long it can take.

We recommend disabling the On Demand Image Overwrite and scheduling the machine to perform an image overwrite outside business hours. This still protects your data, but doesn't leave you down for a few hours during your day. Instructions vary from machine to machine but the instructions below should give you a general idea of how to get this setup.

Disable Immediate Image Overwrite Using CentreWare Internet Services (CWIS):

  1. From a computer, open an Internet browser window.
  2. Enter the IP Address of the printer in the Address field, and then press [Enter] on the keyboard. The CentreWare Internet Services window will be displayed.
  3. Click on the [Properties] tab.
  4. Enter the user name and password in the fields provided, and then click on the [Login] button.

NOTE: The default username is "admin" (case sensitive), and the default password is "1111".
  5. Click on the [Properties] tab.
  6. Click [Security] on the left side of the screen.
  7. Click [Image Overwrite Security].
  8. Click [Immediate Image Overwrite].
  9. Select the [Disabled] radio button to disable.
  10. Click [Apply].

Schedule an Image (Job) Overwrite Using CentreWare Internet Services (CWIS)

When the printer has a Network Controller and is connected over the network, it is possible to run the Image Overwrite function using a web browser. This is performed using CentreWare Internet Services (CWIS).

NOTE:  All existing jobs, regardless of their state, will be deleted and all job submission will be prohibited for the duration of the overwrite. The power button will be ignored during image overwrite.

  5. Click on [Security] to expand the list of options.
  6. Click on [Image Overwrite Security].
  7. Click on the [Scheduled] tab.
  8. To print a Configuration Report after the printer overwrites data, under Confirmation Report Schedule Overwrites, select [On]. To print a report only if an error occurs, select [Errors only].
  9. Select [Enabled].
  10. Select one of the options from the Frequency menu:
    • [Daily]
    • [Weekly] - A calendar week will be shown and a day must be selected for the overwrite to run.
    • [Monthly] - A 28-day calendar will be shown and a day must be selected for the overwrite to run.
  11. If [Weekly] or [Monthly] is selected, click on a day from the calendar that will be displayed, and then specify the time for the overwrite by entering values in the Hour and Minute fields, and then select either [AM] or [PM].
  12. Click on the [Standard] or [Full] radio button to enable the overwrite.
    • [Standard] takes approximately 20 minutes and will delete all image data from hard disk(s) except:
      • Jobs and folders stored in the Reprint Saved Jobs feature
      • Jobs stored in the Scan to Mailbox feature (if installed)
      • Fax Dial Directories (If fax card is installed)
      • Fax Mailbox contents (If fax card is installed)
    • [Full] takes approximately 60 minutes and will delete all image data from hard disk(s), including:
      • Jobs and folders stored in the Reprint Saved Jobs feature
      • Jobs stored in the Scan to Mailbox feature (if installed)
      • Fax Dial Directories (If fax card is installed)
      • Fax Mailbox contents (If fax card is installed)
  13. Click on the [Apply] button. A window stating, "Properties have been successfully modified" will be displayed.
  14. Click on the [OK] button. The printer will be taken offline on the specified day, at the specified time, to perform the overwrite.
  15. Click on the [Logout] link and logout of CWIS.
  16. When finished, close the browser window.
